Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences Interview Guidance
Thank you for applying to study at Keele University and selecting an interview date. Keele University will be conducting all interviews through Microsoft Teams.
You will receive a Microsoft Teams invite confirming your interview date and time slot(s) no later than 24 hours before your interview. Please ensure you check your Junk/Spam folders if the invite does not appear in your inbox. Also, please note when you accept the invite the email may disappear, but the link should go into your calendar (quite common with Outlook and Google email accounts, but please ensure that you check this) or even in your 'Deleted' folder.
How to access Microsoft Teams interview
Please click here for instructions on how to access your Microsoft Teams interview. Please note we do not allow any changes to the background setting during your Microsoft Teams interview.
You will need to have access to a computer or laptop with webcam and microphone, and have a reliable internet connection. It is possible to use a tablet/smartphone with video call capability for the interview, however you would need to download the Microsoft Teams app.
Please ensure that you choose a suitable location to complete your interview - this should be quiet and you should ensure that you are not disturbed for the duration of the interview. Please wear whatever you feel comfortable in for your interview. If you are under 18, an adult should be in the house with you at the time (although not present at the interview). We advise that you use Microsoft Teams with family or friends beforehand, using the location and equipment you plan to use at interview, to ensure everything is in working order.
Issues during interviews - Please note you must let your interviewers know immediately if you are having technical or medical/personal issues during your interview. If you choose to continue with the interview and fail to notify the interviewers, we will be unable to reschedule the interview.
Below you will find some guidance on how to resolve the most common technical issues:

What to expect at your interview
During your Microsoft Teams interview you will be expected to have your camera on throughout (unless instructed to switch the camera off by the interviewer), otherwise we will not be able to conduct your interview. You need to join the Microsoft Teams meeting 5 minutes before your allocated interview time, where you will be let in at the exact time of your interview slot, to ensure we can carry out the ID check with minimum delay. You will need to provide an original Photo ID document to the camera. The following forms of Photo ID can be accepted:
- Passport (can be expired)
- Driving Licence (Full or Provisional)
- Student ID Card
- Biometric Residence Card
- CitizenCard
If we cannot carry out this ID check, your interview will not continue and you may not be offered an opportunity of an alternative date. Please contact us prior to your interview date if you have any queries about the type of ID that will be accepted.
To ensure all interviews keep to schedule on the day we will be unable to accommodate late arrivals at short notice.
Once your ID check has been completed, the interview will commence (further course information about your interview can be found below). Following your interview, you will normally receive a decision within 14 working days, however during our busier months it may take a little longer. For some courses you may have to wait longer if you are placed on a reserve / waiting list, which we will contact you about.
Additional Information
If you need any additional support or adjustments for your interview please email the Student Recruitment Events Team on applicant.interviews@keele.ac.uk confirming details of your request 1 week before your interview date. This is a separate process to declaring any additional support which you will have entered on your UCAS application.
Please upload any copies of your completed qualifications (including GCSEs and any higher level qualifications) to the applicant portal before your interview date. If any certificates are in a previous name, you will also need to upload evidence of the name change (e.g. marriage certificate/change of name deed). Please name each file that you upload according to the document it contains.
Communication and attendance at interviews are an important demonstration of your professionalism. If there are circumstances which mean that you are unable to attend your interview date or you no longer wish to be considered for the course, please contact the Student Recruitment Events Team on 01782 731806 or email applicant.interviews@keele.ac.uk as soon as possible. You will need to provide sufficient evidenceof the reason why you need to reschedule and this must be communicated in a timely manner. You may not be offered an alternative interview date if you fail to attend without good reason or sufficient notice. If we can reschedule your interview, please note you can only do so once.
In the meantime, good luck and we look forward to meeting you at your interview. Please click here to see our interview policy. If you have any other queries in relation to your application, please contact Admissions on 01782 734010 or email admissions@keele.ac.uk
Your Group Task will take place at 10am on the day of your interview. After a short welcome and overview of the course at Keele, you will be asked to discuss (in a group) a case scenario which will be attached to your Microsoft Teams invite. The Group Task and the welcome talk will last approximately 50 minutes. Your individual interview will be in the afternoon (time slot of your choosing on the Applicant Portal).
Please note you must attend the Group Task before your interview. If you do not attend this session, you will not be permitted to attend your individual interview.
Congratulations! You have managed to secure an interview for our well-established and highly regarded social work courses. We look forward to meeting you in your forthcoming interview and hearing more about your motivation and preparation for entering what is undoubtedly a challenging course of study, but one that offers significant satisfaction and reward too. If you are successful in being offered a place on one of our courses, you can expect to join a diverse group of fellow students and to work with a highly student-focussed and professionally qualified academic staff group too. Places on our courses are often significantly oversubscribed and so by reaching the interview stage, you have already done very well indeed. We hope that this guidance document will help you show your potential to the best of your ability during the remaining elements of the selection process.
How to prepare for a selection day:
Practicalities – make sure you you can access meetings/links and information you need ahead of the interview day; let us know if you would like to request disability-related adjustments to the selection process to support your participation.
Other preparation that will help you show your full potential – revisit your personal statement to make sure you are familiar with all you have said about your motivations and interests in starting your professional training. Think about what it is about social work (and not just the ‘helping’ element) that means it is a good career/course for you and also why you are a good candidate for the social work course. So, what is it about you as a person, your skills and values and abilities, that means you have the potential to become a safe and effective practitioner. In order to do this, you may need to make sure you have expanded your understanding of what social work is, and what social workers do in a range of contexts. You may find the following reading helpful, and in addition, make sure that you watch and read about current and recent news stories relevant to social work and make the most of any current or previous studies too and come prepared to draw upon these in your interview:
Community Care Online
Guardian Society Section
British Association of Social Workers (BASW)
Social Work England
How will you be assessed:
The assessors will be trained and experienced service users and carers, social work practitioners and academic tutors. You will have sight of the interview questions at the start of the interview so that you can refer back to these if needed throughout.
Your interview will be based upon a number of questions that are the same for all candidates and one that is specific to your application, based upon information you have included in that. You will be able to ask questions too and we also hope that you will feel comfortable enough to say if you do not understand questions and want anything re-phrased at all. We know that many people will be nervous!
You will need to be successful in both the individual interview and the group task in order to be offered a place on the course, and we will aim to make decisions within a week of the interviews where at all possible.
The questions have been designed to help assess your current preparation and readiness to start a professional social work course of study and so are based upon our regulatory body requirements and also national expectations and sector standards. In order to complete your preparation for interview, you will find it helpful to be familiar with these standards. Details can be found via the links below:
Social Work England Regulatory Body, look at ‘Professional Standards’ and importantly for this stage, at ‘Education and Training Standards, 2021’ from the menu on the home page.
British Association of Social Workers (BASW) - Professional Capabilities Framework (PCF) Professional Body with good practice and sector standards we work to. Look at entry level standards and expectations of what applicants know and understand before entering social work courses.
We hope that you find preparing for the interview process deepens your motivation as well as furthering your understanding of social work and the nature of social work education and we look forward to meeting you soon.
