Apprenticeships

The impact that apprenticeships has had on the Dougie Mac has been amazing. Really proud of our nursing associates and that really does enhance the care that we deliver because it up-skills people, gives them extra knowledge. I think that it's really valuable, getting on the job experience. It teaches you whether you'd enjoy the job and it puts what you're learning at university into practice. When you go into a meeting with people, and I have a meeting with a lot of experts, doing this has given me so much more confidence to actually go in there reputationally.

It's really helping the department to have people who work with stakeholders who know what they're talking about. I have changed my role to become the head of wellbeing that allowed me to lead four teams who touched the lives of thousands of people year on year. It was a way to continue my learning, to develop my career, but still to be able to earn money and a salary and provide for our employees, and for our employers, this is a way to check your technical staff to the level of the 21st century.

You'll get the support that you need from the academic team. You get the support from the pastoral side. You get all the wonderful facilities of the campus and you get the opportunity to bring that learning back to your own organization. It helped to develop me as a person. It helped to develop my confidence in myself. It helped to develop my presentation skills. The central feature of anything that we do is our apprentice and making sure that apprentices are appropriately supported to succeed.

The very fact that I'm having a positive influence on somebody's career, there's no price I can put on that. Every skill I learned within doing the Data Science degree apprenticeship is now applicable in my job. It is a fantastic opportunity. It improves me as an employee because I have the up-to-date skills. I was able to take the study that I got from Keele University back into my workplace and put that forward into my own innovation.
