KIITE Learning Developer Angela Rhead recently shared her insights into academic reading at a workshop with Leeds University Lifelong Learning Centre.

Angela was invited to deliver a workshop about her research into Academic Reading Retreats, after Leeds Teaching Fellow Kat Munn attended a KIITE Academic Reading Symposium - Becoming Well Read - organised by Angela in 2019.

Becoming Well Read 2019 brought together over fifty delegates from twenty different institutions across the UK to enjoy the first event of this type to take place in the sector: to explore academic reading practices, to reflect on the challenges of teaching reading for academic purposes and to share innovative and interesting teaching methods.

The Lifelong Learning Centre (LLC) at Leeds promotes programmes, pathways and support for adult, part-time and foundation level students especially, although not exclusively, those from disadvantaged and under-represented groups.

Following from last year’s highly successful event, the second academic reading symposium will continue to explore this vital but often overlooked aspect of academic literacy. It will be valuable to anyone whose central focus is educational, learning or academic development, and to academic teaching staff who are looking for new ways of supporting their students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
