Alison Long

Biography

Alison Long is Programme Director for Modern Languages, module co-ordinator for British Cultural Studies and Postgraduate Researcher courses, and is the Language Centre's Disability Liaison Officer. She is also a Board member for the MA in Cultural Linguistics of Great Britain and the USA at St Petersburg State University, Russia.

Her research interests are language change (specifically in the Slavonic languages), endangered languages and language policy, and language construction. She created the Illitan language for the BBC's adaptation of China Mieville's The City and The City.

Alison joined the Language Centre as a sessional teacher in 2011, and became a full-time member of staff in 2012. She previously worked as a Disability Officer at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and prior to that was a full-time research student at the University of Surrey.

Alison has a BA (Hons) in Russian, an MA in Comparative Literature from UCL and a PhD in Russian language change from the University of Surrey. She also has a DipTESOL from Trinity College and a postgraduate certificate in learning and teaching in higher education. She has been a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy since 2006.
