Special Collections Spotlight: Sneyd Family Papers
Introducing the Sneyd Family Papers from our Special Collections and Archives!
The long connection between Keele and the Sneyd family began when Sir William Sneyd first purchased the Keele estate in 1540 after the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII. The estate, and other lands, were continuously owned by the Sneyd family for over 400 years until their acquisition by the Stoke on Trent Corporation in 1948. The Sneyd family dates back even further to the 13th Century as a minor branch of the Audley family in Cheshire.
The Sneyd Papers date back to the 14th century and comprise deeds, manorial, estate and business records, as well as family correspondence, music scores, sketches and watercolours.
The Papers are complemented by the Knights and Sons Archive of deeds and estate ledgers deposited by the law firm who acted as solicitors to the Sneyd family.
