Library Resource Spotlight: Literature Online (LION)
To celebrate International Women’s Day (8th March), let’s introduce Literature Online (LION)!
Literature Online (LION) is an English literature research tool with coverage from the 8th Century to the present day. This database, which contains more than 350,000 works of poetry, prose and drama, brings primary works, reference materials, and literary criticism together, alongside literary figures that have long held the public’s attention with material from Pulitzer and Nobel winners!
There is the search functionality to perform basic and advanced searches as well as the ability to browse authors by literary periods, by literary movements or by name. There’s also literature collections to explore, such as African American Poetry, Canadian Poetry, Nineteenth-Century Fiction, and Irish Women Poets of the Romantic Period. Additionally, there’s also audio and video collections, such as the Shakespeare Audio Plays, the Poets on Screen Collection, and the Poetry Archive!
International Women’s Day is an annual celebration dedicated to the advancement of women worldwide and honours the achievements of women across all aspects of life, whilst also advocating for gender equality. The history of International Women’s Day can be traced back to the groups and individuals that played a foundational role in championing women’s rights; with the first International Women’s Day being held in 1911 by Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland, and the Day being marked for the first time by the United Nations in 1975!
To celebrate the Day and the achievements of some distinguished women poets, playwrights and authors, such as Toni Morrison, Mary Wollstonescraft Shelley, Virginia Woolf, Margaret Atwood, and Harper Lee, go to Literature Online (LION) and see what you can discover!
For access, please login with your Keele username and password. Literature Online (LION) is also available on the Library’s A-Z of online resources and there’s a handy help page too!
