School of Life Sciences facilities

The David Attenborough laboratories

Keele University has invested £45m in the creation of new state-of-the-art science facilities on its campus, including new laboratories and teaching spaces, as part of the biggest single investment in learning and teaching in the University’s history. The facilities were officially opened by Sir David Attenborough as part of the University's 70th-anniversary celebrations.

The David Attenborough Laboratories have significantly expanded the School of Life Sciences’ teaching and research areas, and provide two additional state-of-the-art teaching laboratories with space for 120 students between them.

The laboratories boast two additional research laboratories, enabling high-quality research to be central to the School of Life Sciences.

The research laboratories will make a significant contribution to the Global Health Initiative at Keele and will be home to researchers working on neurological disorders including Parkinson’s disease, spinal injury, oncology, viral infections and carbohydrate biochemistry.

Geography, Geology and the Environment facilities

Our research and teaching facilities include world-class laboratories, an extensive range of analytical instruments and our unique living lab.

The William Smith building is situated towards the centre of campus, with all of the laboratories having been refurbished over the past few years to provide up-to-date teaching facilities. The majority of our undergraduate and postgraduate classes, and research facilities are located within or nearby to the William Smith Building, including a state of the art dedicated teaching floor in the new Central Science Laboratories (CSL), and the Keele University Ice Laboratory (IceLab) - a laboratory that provides dedicated high-precision water isotope and fluorescence spectrometry.

Science laboratories

Geography, Geology and Environment benefits from its very own dedicated teaching space in the new state-of-the-art Central Science Laboratory (CSL). Featuring 80 new polarising microscopes and 20 new low powered microscopes, the CSL allows us to innovate and enhance the teaching experience of our students, and supports a highly tailored approach to practical learning.
