Research

The research conducted at the Keele University School of Medicine is directly relevant to achieving sustainability and improving planetary health.

A significant proportion of our research focuses on improving self-management and non-pharmacological approaches to improving health outcomes for people with painful musculoskeletal disorders and common mental health problems, both in the UK and globally. By reducing reliance on health services, medication and surgery we can help to improve the sustainability of service provision and reduce our carbon footprint.

Our methodological approaches, such as innovating in systematic reviews and meta-analysis, and through the use of existing datasets (such as routinely collected health records) reduces research waste and maximises the benefit to people living with long term conditions. By reducing the need to collect new data, or through using electronic approaches (rather than face to face methods using paper questionnaires) we can also reduce our environmental footprint.
