Biography

Professor Roddy graduated from the University of Nottingham in 1997 and subsequently undertook training in general medicine in Nottingham and Western Australia and rheumatology in the East Midlands. He undertook his doctoral thesis under the supervision of Professor Michael Doherty at the University of Nottingham, researching the epidemiology and treatment of gout in primary care.

Ed came to Keele in 2007 as a Clinical Lecturer in Rheumatology. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2011, to Reader in 2017, and to Professor of Rheumatology in 2021. He works clinically as an Honorary Consultant Rheumatologist at the Haywood Hospital, Midlands Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians.

He is co-lead for Keele’s inflammatory conditions research programme, director of the Keele-Haywood Academic Rheumatology Group, and provides medical leadership for Keele CTU.

Research and scholarship

Ed leads cohort studies and clinical trials in gout and common foot/ankle problems such as osteoarthritis and plantar heel pain. He has also been Chief Investigator for trials of corticosteroid injections for carpal tunnel syndrome and hip osteoarthritis. He leads a programme of work investigating the associations of gout with comorbidities and the clinical effectiveness of gout treatments in the Clinical Practice Research Datalink. His work has been funded by Versus Arthritis, and the NIHR Health Technology Assessment, Research for Patient Benefit Programme, and School for Primary Care Research.

Ed supervises PhD students, intercalated medical student MPhils, Academic Foundation trainees, Academic Clinical Fellows, and undergraduate student projects. He has published over 170 peer-reviewed publications and contributed to over £14million in grant income. Current active research collaborators include researchers in Australia, New Zealand, France, Sweden, and the USA, as well as across the UK.

Teaching

Ed leads Keele CTU’s annual 4-day short course: ‘Practical Introduction to Running Randomised Clinical Trials’.

He teaches undergraduate medical students and on the MSc Rheumatology Nursing at Keele. He previously led a 4-week Student Selected Component in research methods for undergraduate medical students. He also undertakes clinical teaching for GPs, hospital physicians, podiatrists, and physiotherapists, and contributes to West Midlands regional rheumatology speciality registrar study days. He led the British Society for Rheumatology’s first-ever Complex Crystal Arthritis course in 2020.

Ed has given numerous invited lectures at regional, national and international meetings and co-authored 16 book chapters, including the Crystal Arthropathy chapter in the Oxford Textbook of Medicine. He is currently the senior author for the Crystal Arthropathies module of the European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology (EULAR) online course.
