Biography
I gained my MBChB from Sheffield University in 2005. I did my foundation training at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire and Stafford General Hospital. I then completed my General Practice training on the North Staffs Vocational Training Scheme in 2011, completing my Masters of Medical Science at the Arthritis Research UK Primary Care Centre, Keele University, alongside my clinical training. I was awarded my PhD by Keele University in 2015 after investigating the association between gout and vascular disease using electronic health records from the Clinical Practice Research Datalink. I continue to work as a practicing GP in North Staffordshire and as part of the Inflammatory Research Group at the Research Institute for Primary Care and Health Sciences.
Research and scholarship
I have used a variety of research methods in my research career thus far. My MMedSci dissertation reported the analysis of a cross-sectional survey of general practitioners eliciting their views on the monitoring of osteoarthritis and whether OA should be added to the Quality and Outcomes Framework of the General Practice Contract. My PhD research used survival analysis to examine the association between gout and incidence cardiovascular, cerebrovascular and peripheral vascular disease in a large dataset of primary care electronic health records from the Clinical Practice Research Datalink. My ongoing research continues to investigate the association between a variety of systemic inflammatory diseases and adverse outcomes using data from the CPRD.
Teaching
I am the course lead for the Year 3 SSC entitled Research: What every doctor needs to know. I also teach on the Year 3 Public Health Modules.
