Biography

Dr Marisza Hijryana is a Teaching Fellow in Public and Global Health at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. She is actively involved in teaching, supporting, and supervising postgraduate and undergraduate students at the School of Medicine. Marisza is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA).

Prior to joining Keele University, she worked as a Postdoctoral Research Assistant at the Institute of Epidemiology and Health Care, University College London (UCL) where she worked on the Lancet Commission on Oral Health and National Institute for Health and Research (NIHR) Global Oral Health projects. She also supported activities linked to the UCL-WHO Collaborating Centre. In addition, she was a Research Fellow at the Primary Care, Population Sciences and Medical Education, University of Southampton where she worked on a mixed-methods study on Multiple Long-Term Conditions (MLTC). She was also an Honorary Teaching Fellow at the Edinburgh Dental Institute, University of Edinburgh.

Marisza obtained her PhD from the University of Edinburgh (UK) where she received Principal's Career Development and Edinburgh Global Research Scholarships. She completed a Master’s in Public Health Methodology from Universite Libre de Bruxelles (Belgium) and a Doctor of Dental Surgery from Padjadjaran University (Indonesia). She is a mixed-methods researcher with an interest in global public health and health-related quality of life, especially in examining the integration of the impacts of disease burden and health-related determinants (individual characteristics and behaviours, social and economic determinants, physical environmental determinants, and commercial determinants) on people’s quality of life.

Research and scholarship

Teaching

Marisza teaches Applied Epidemiology, Leadership and Complexity in Global Healthcare, and Statistical Methods and Epidemiology for the Master of Public Health (MPH) programme. She also supervises postgraduate students' dissertations.

Furthermore, Marisza is actively involved in the public health teaching programme for Keele's Medicine MBChB course. She covers teaching on introduction to population health, health promotion, evidence-based healthcare, and research methods with the core aim of developing students’ ability to improve population health and clinical care.
