Research and scholarship

My research focuses on the optimal diagnosis and management of common inflammatory rheumatological conditions especially rheumatoid arthritis (RA), polymyalgia rheumatica and gout. I am interested in the long-term impacts of chronic inflammatory conditions, especially the overlap between physical and mental health and management of multimorbidity.

I am passionate about engaging others with clinical research. I enjoy supervising postgraduate students and have supervised 3 PhDs to completion (plus two ongoing) and 4 MPhil projects to completion and was Director of Postgraduate Research for the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences from 2019-2021. I am co-lead for the ASPIRE (formerly INSPIRE) medical research programme (established with support from North Staffordshire Medical Institute, Academy of Medical Sciences & Wellcome Trust) which aims to engage medical undergraduates with research.
