‌A Keele University student has transformed a children’s room at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH) into a colourful animal kingdom.

History and Sociology student Victoria Jenkinson, 20, volunteered to paint the room inside the hospital’s A&E department to improve the children’s hospital experience.

Victoria, from Stafford, said: “My Mum works at the hospital and I volunteered to paint the room as I love to paint and I really enjoy doing stuff for children.

“When I was painting the room children came in to see the wall and that was really cute to see.

“I thought the idea of a jungle scene was perfect as children love animals and it gave me the chance to add a real splash of colour.”

Despite her impressive skills with a paintbrush, Victoria aims to become a history teacher once she’s finished her studies at Keele.

She said: “I studied art at A-Level but my aim is to become a history teacher. I love art but want to enjoy it as a hobby rather than a career.

“I have never done anything like this before. It is not something I do as a job; I just wanted to do something that will benefit the children. I am delighted with the end result and really enjoyed doing it.”

Karen Thompson, A&E Ward Manager at the Hospital, said: “We are thrilled with how wonderful the room looks. It is now a much nicer experience for children coming to A&E.”

Victoria has been working on the animal kingdom painting for the last few months whilst balancing her studies and undertaking community work as a Colwich Parish Councillor.

Victoria is also a Girlguiding UK advocate and is running the London Marathon this year to raise money for the charity. To find out more or to sponsor Victoria visit her fundraising page.
