Keele ranked in Global Top 20 in sustainability league table
Keele University has for the second successive year been ranked in the Top 20 universities in a global sustainability league table.
The 2017 UI Green Metric World University ranking saw 619 universities from 76 countries ranked for their campus sustainability efforts. Keele was placed 17th in the overall table, and ranked fifth in the world for its performance in ‘Energy and Climate Change’.
Keele’s top five ranking for ‘Energy and Climate Change’ reflects the University’s sector-leading performance in the efficient use of energy, and a commitment to investment in renewable energy, energy efficiency and carbon reduction on campus.
This is the eighth edition of the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking, which compares universities’ efforts towards campus sustainability, environment-friendly university management and sustainability education.
Each university was judged across six main categories:
- Setting and Infrastructure
- Energy and Climate Change
- Waste management
- Water usage
- Transportation
- Education
Professor Mark Ormerod, Deputy Vice Chancellor and Provost of Keele University, said: “Sustainability is a key overarching institutional priority for Keele University, and we are delighted to again be ranked so highly in this global league table. This result really reflects our whole-institution approach to sustainability at Keele. The result demonstrates that Keele has a strong commitment to educating our students on sustainability, to the campus and community, and to ensuring we improve the sustainability of our operations, in addition to being a leader for research and innovation in clean energy, carbon reduction and sustainability.”
The UI GreenMetric ranking success follows Keele’s recent announcement of the Smart Energy Network Demonstrator, a major project to create Europe’s first at-scale living laboratory for the research, development and demonstration of new smart energy technologies in partnership with business.
