Degree classification

Students commencing prior to September 2016

Please note that the Levels of study referred to below are those used in the Framework for Higher Education Qualifications (FHEQ)

SCOPE: The following degree classification algorithm applies to all students commencing Level 6 study prior to September 2016

A student’s degree classification will be calculated as follows:

FIRST CLASS HONOURS

An aggregate mark of at least 560

OR an aggregate mark of at least 520 and at least 75 Level III credits all gained from modules with a mark of 70 or higher

SECOND CLASS HONOURS (Division I)

An aggregate mark of at least 480

OR an aggregate mark of at least 440 and at least 75 Level III credits all gained from modules with a mark of 60 or higher.

SECOND CLASS HONOURS (Division II)

An aggregate mark of at least 400

OR an aggregate mark of at least 360 and at least 75 Level III credits all gained from modules with a mark of 50 or higher.

THIRD CLASS HONOURS

An aggregate mark of at least 320 

PASS

Not awarded

All modules must receive marks of 40 or higher.

DEFINITIONS:

Aggregate Mark: The sum of the marks for all level III modules (maximum 800).

Module: A 15 CATS-credit unit

NOTES:

(a) Module mark: may be made up of assessment components. How the assessment components make up the mark is published in the relevant course handbook.

(b) For students repeating a year of study at level II or III it will be the marks achieved for modules taken in the repeat year that will be used in the classification.

(c) An assignment which fails on first submission can be resubmitted. A second submission will be awarded a mark no higher than 40.
