Institute for Sustainable Futures showcase

The ISF will be showcasing two different areas of ISF research – storytelling for sustainability and place-based decarbonisation. Each of these sessions will present some of the past work and existing projects, but the focus will be on discussions and exploration of the potential for new collaborations and projects. Anyone interested in these areas is encouraged to come along and take part, whether to just find out more, discuss your own work, or explore synergies with other projects.

The two sessions are:

1. Storytelling and sustainability (10am-12pm)

This session will be led by Dr Pawas Bisht, Deputy Director of the Institute for Sustainable Futures, and master ‘environmental storyteller’! This session will explore the role of storytelling in achieving a sustainable future and showcase a range of ISF-based projects bringing together research and education looking at storytelling linked to biodiversity, plastic pollution, air pollution, and decarbonisation. Participants are invited to share their own approaches to storytelling or explore the potential for storytelling approaches in their own research.

2. Place-based decarbonisation (2pm-4pm)

This session will be led by Professor Zoe Robinson, Director of the Institute for Sustainable Futures. The UK government’s approach to achieving ‘net zero’ is increasingly ‘place-based’ integrating different energy vectors and services (heat, mobility, transport, generation, storage) and generating solutions which are place-specific. This approach requires much greater collaboration across different organisation functions and sectors, and new approaches for engaging deeply with local communities. This session will outline some of the recent Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent place-based decarbonisation projects including Zero Carbon Rugeley and Chatterley Whitfield regeneration. Keele has a key role to play in place-based decarbonisation in the local area with a wealth of research opportunities across different disciplines areas providing avenues for discussion and collaboration throughout this session
