Breath analysis could become a non-invasive tool for disease diagnosis. At Keele, we are using the Selected Ion Flow Tube Mass Spectrometry (SIFT-MS) to study volatiles released by cancer and non-malignant cells in order to develop a methodology to diagnose cancer through breath. This will help clinicians to achieve early cancer diagnosis, quickly monitor tumour response to treatment, and identify recurrent disease promptly. This will ultimately lead to improved cancer management and treatment outcomes. The non-invasiveness of SIFT-MS will be welcomed specially in the management of children with cancer.
