Professor Neil Telling
Neil explores nanotechnology for potential cancer therapy applications. High frequency alternating magnetic fields stimulate magnetic nanoparticles that are internalised within cancer cells. This creates heat which is released into the surrounding cells causing apoptosis. The advantage of the technique is that only cells associated with nanoparticles will be affected. The group has developed new magneto-optical techniques that enable the magnetic properties of the nanoparticles to be probed inside cells. This has enabled an understanding of the behaviour of the nanoparticles which will allow the development of new materials and technology that provide optimal heating and enable cancer treatment on a cell-by-cell basis.
