Dr Ruoli Chen
Ruoli’s research interests include hypoxia biology, stroke medicine and blood brain barriers. In particular, his work focuses on pharmacological activation of hypoxia inducible factor pathways in stroke therapy and prevention. This work involves the application of a novel class of prolyl hydroxylase inhibitors in stroke and vascular dementia treatments.
He also studies glia – neuron interaction in hypoxia and ischaemia, and analyses the astrocyte secretome at different duration of ischaemia and its impact on ischaemic neurons. Ruoli is also interested in neuroinflammation in hypoxia, and he investigates effects of microglial activation on blood brain barrier functions in hypoxia. Ruoli uses a combination of in vitro and in vivo cerebral ischaemia models
