Virtual reality and digital heritage

We contribute to international digital heritage research enabling the digitisation, 3D viewing and virtual reconstruction of cuneiform tablets; humankind’s earliest writings impressed in clay tablets.

The Virtual Cuneiform Tablet Reconstruction Project is an international collaboration inspired by the ambition to support virtual access to cuneiform artefacts and to reconstruct cuneiform tablets by joining virtual fragments together. Our research has contributed to the project’s 3D artefact acquisition and 3D viewer research, automated virtual reconstruction algorithm which achieved a first long-distance artefact reconstruction (video summary), a collaborative reconstruction environment and augmented reality apps for museum artefacts. Our contributions to the project also include Augmented Reality apps for museum artefacts and we continue to explore connected and engaging virtual reality experiences for cuneiform artefacts.

Please see our publications and project website for more information about cuneiform and the 3D reconstruction challenge and the 3D viewer prototype now integrated into the international ‘CDLI’ cuneiform database via a Google Summer of Code project.‌
