Qualitative research methods

We have expertise in using a wide range of qualitative approaches and methods including:

  • Interviews and focus group
  • Ethnography and observational research
  • Netnography and online research blogs
  • Creative methods (for example photovoice, lego serious play, storyboard interviews)
  • Diaries
  • Discourse analysis

Team national and international roles:

  • Dr Ben Saunders is an Editor International Journal of Social Research Methodology
  • Professor Clare Jinks leads the qualitative workstream of the NIHR Incubator for Applied Health and Care Methodology.

We have an extensive portfolio of undertaking qualitative research in trials, across the evaluation pathway and in different trial designs. Our work includes intervention development, investigating experiences of health and care interventions, implementation and understanding behaviour change. We are members of the Qualitative Research in Trials group (QRIT) and Trial Conduct Working Group of the MRC-NIHR Trials Methodology Research Partnership (TMRP). https://www.methodologyhubs.mrc.ac.uk/.
