Cardiology research undertaken by Keele University and University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust (UHNM) has been on show at four major international cardiology events in four different countries over the past three months.

Professor Mamas Mamas, Consultant Cardiologist at UHNM and Professor of Cardiology at Keele University, was invited to give a talk at an event in the USA at the end of October, and has since been invited to present his group’s pioneering research at events in Berlin, Saudi Arabia and most recently Poland.

Each presentation showcased world-class work undertaken by researchers at the UHNM/Keele University Cardiovascular Research Group. This included a technique developed by Professor Mamas, leader of the group, for sheathless Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI), a nonsurgical procedure that improves blood flow to the heart, as well as analyses of national data to inform best practice for patients undergoing such procedures.

Professor Mamas’ other talks were based on cutting edge research undertaken by the group, such as using electronic healthcare data to improve clinical care of patients, using social media for training and research, and safer PCI through the radial approach.

UHNM was also shortlisted as one of twelve showcases at the NHS Providers annual conference. The team displayed how cardiology research at UHNM has contributed to national changes in the practice of interventional cardiology.

Professor Mamas, said: “Our research undertaken at UHNM and Keele University utilising electronic national healthcare records has contributed to improvements in patient safety both nationally and internationally, and has placed UHNM/Keele University at the forefront of interventional cardiological practice internationally.”
