Biography
Derek McGhee (PhD) is Professor of Sociology, Faculty Dean of Research for Humanities and Social Sciences, and the Director of the Keele Institute for Social Inclusion at Keele University. Previous to starting at Keele in early 2018, Prof McGhee was Professor of Sociology and Head of Social Sciences at the University of Southampton, where he had been for almost twenty years. Professor McGhee was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal Society of Arts in 2015 and a Fellowship of the Academy of Social Sciences in 2016 in recognition of his contribution to the disciplines of Social Policy and Sociology.
Research and scholarship
Prof Derek McGhee is the author of four single-authored research monographs: Homosexuality, Law & Resistance (Routledge 2001) and Intolerant Britain? Hate, Citizenship & Difference (Open University Press 2005); The End of Multiculturalism? Terrorism, Integration & Human Rights (Open University Press 2008); Security, Citizenship & Human Rights - Shared Values in Uncertain Times (Palgrave Macmillan); and the co-authored of two monographs (both with Dr Shaoying Zhang, Shanghai University of Political Sciences and Law) Social Policies and Ethnic Conflict in China, 2014, Palgrave Macmillan); China’s Ethical Revolution and Regaining Legitimacy: Reforming the Communist Party through its Public Servants, (2017, Palgrave Macmillan). As well as his book projects, Prof McGhee is the author of many refereed journal articles and has been involved in and lead a number of high profile ESRC research projects through the ESRC Centre for Population Change focusing on European migration to the UK, in particular Polish migrants’ settlement practices in the UK.
Professor McGhee is keen to work with Doctoral Students interest in pursuing research in any of his areas of expertise.
Teaching
As a consequence of his roles as Faculty Dean of Research and Director of the Institute for Social Inclusion; Prof McGhee does not currently have any formal teaching commitments.
