Ray Johnson Prize for an Outstanding Media Project

Award type: Certificate

This prize is awarded annually for the best practical project by an undergraduate student in MCC.

This prize will be listed on the HEAR, and announced at graduation.

Wedgwood History Dissertation Prize

Award type: Book token
Amount: £40

This prize is awarded each year for the best dissertation in the History Bachelor's degree Special Subject examination. Assessment shall be by the History Finals Examination Board.

This prize will be listed on the HEAR, and announced at graduation.

David Bruce Centre Student Domestic Travel Fund

Amount: up to £100 (maximum per student per academic year)
Purpose: to facilitate travel (not subsistence) for domestic research trips (e.g. to British Library)
Eligibility: all Keele postgraduate or final-year undergraduate students with a research interest in North America are eligible to apply
Application procedure: students may apply on a rolling basis, before or after research has occurred.

To apply, email the David Bruce Centre Director, James Peacock (j.h.peacock@keele.ac.uk) a letter of application, and include the following:

  1. The cost incurred (e.g. train fare, and if necessary for research, overnight accommodation)
  2. A 300-word description of your project and justification for the funding (typically a list of the materials to consult that are unavailable at Keele)

Note: to receive reimbursement, students must keep travel receipts. The David Bruce Centre for the Study of the Americas will reimburse standard-class tickets only, and encourages students to book advance fares wherever possible.

Adams Prize for American History

The Adams Prize for American History is awarded annually for the best dissertation by a Keele undergraduate student in the field of American history. No application is required. In consultation with relevant Programme Directors, the Director of the David Bruce Centre for the Study of the Americas nominates prize winners. Nominations are approved at the American Studies external examiners’ meeting in June. This prize will be listed on both the student transcript and the HEAR, and will be announced at graduation.

Charles Swann Prize for American Literature

The Charles Swann Prize for American Literature is awarded annually for the best dissertation by a Keele undergraduate student in the field of American literature and culture. The Prize is awarded in memory of Charles Swann, who taught American literature at Keele with unique distinction for over thirty years. No application is required. In consultation with relevant Programme Directors, the Director of the David Bruce Centre for the Study of the Americas nominates prize winners. Nominations are approved at the American Studies external examiners’ meeting in June.

This prize will be listed on both the student transcript and the HEAR, and will be announced at graduation.

History Undergraduate Dissertation Fund

The History Programme funds four undergraduate dissertation projects per academic year. Successful applicants will receive £250 each to support their dissertation research.

A committee comprising two historians (including the Programme director), the Head of School of the Humanities as well as the School Director of Education will select the successful candidates.

Please submit application forms (which can be found here) no later than 22 November 2024. The selection panel aims to communicate decisions no later than 13 December 2024.
