Overview

This module offers a highly flexible blended learning approach and enables newly registered practitioners to gain academic credits for undertaking all elements of the module that can build towards a Masters level qualification from Keele University, or as a standalone module. The module is based on the following: the NHS (2022) National Preceptorship Framework for Nursing, the Nursing and Midwifery Council (2020) Principles for Preceptorship and the National Allied Health Professionals Preceptorships and Foundation Support programme (2023). If you have already completed a non-accredited preceptorship module in line with these frameworks, then it is possible to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), which could enable you to gain 30 credits towards Level 7 (Master's degree) study. 

Module aims

This module provides a formal study curriculum to enable newly qualified practitioners to access preceptorship during their first year within a health and care organisation. The module will provide accreditation for the preceptorship journey on successful completion.

Entry requirements

This module is available for home students only who are employed in an NHS or health and social care setting and are supported by their employer. 

All applicants will hold a current registration with a recognised professional statutory and regulatory body (PSRB), such as the NMC or HCPC.
Applicants will normally have either a degree or an equivalent professional qualification such as a postgraduate diploma, and appropriate clinical experience.
Candidates must work within an NHS or Health and Social Care organisation with access to support and supervision from an appropriate clinical lead.

The module will be delivered from January 2025 and in conjunction with practice partners, supported, accredited and administered by academic experts within the School of Nursing and Midwifery.

• The reflective practitioner
• Managing caseloads
• Role modelling and the role of the health and care professional  
• Strategies to promote good professional relationships in the workplace 
• Giving and receiving feedback on professional performance
• Risk assessment
• Quality improvement models
• Managing professional progress reviews
• SLOC analysis; recognising and addressing learning needs
• Portfolio development
• Poster construction
• Presentation skills
