Taught over two semesters, this module is designed to develop academic and professional standards, attributes, knowledge, skills and values, both as a current learner and future healthcare worker.Improving your ability to study, you’ll develop key skills such as teamworking,collaboration, problem-solving, decision making,time management, priority setting, listening, written and physical communication skills.

This module will develop your understanding of the fundamentalmathematical techniques and quantitative methods used across health science-related and social care programmes.Using problem-based learning, you will learn how to apply some of the most commonly used mathematical techniques in applied health sciences, converting data to the information used to support decision making in healthcare settings.

This module consolidates any prior learning of human biologytobuild your knowledge of the functioning of a healthy human body. Starting with a look at basic cell biology, you will explore the main types of body tissues and structures and discuss how body systems work so that people can lead a healthy and active life. Developing analytical skills, you will also learn to evaluate and interpret scientific data.

Advancing Chemistry for Health (15 credits)
Building on the topics covered in the first semester, this module will provide you with advancing chemistry knowledge. We introduce concepts relating to organic, inorganic, physical and analytical chemistry. We also focus on developing your laboratory skills and techniques, including safe handling of chemicals; recording accurate qualitativeobservations; quantitative analysis from practical procedures, reporting, analysing and interpreting experimental results.

Foundations in Health and Society (15 credits)
This module explores historical and contemporary approaches to health and social care within the UK, such as the determinants of health and what ‘health’ and ‘social care’ means to a diverse society.You will examine a range of health issues and the structures involved in the provision ofhealth and social care services. You will also be introduced to the psychological and sociological approaches needed to promote the changesrequired to support a ‘healthy’ population.
Advancing Human Biology for Health
Advancing Human Biology for Health (30 credits)
Following on from introductory content in the first semester, you will explore the concept of gene mutation and some of the common issues that this can cause. Delving further into hormones and homeostasis, you will research conditions such as diabetes and hyper/hypothyroidism. Immunology will build on the foundations of knowledge in cells and tissues, focusing on infectious and noninfectious diseases, including current topical issues such as anti-microbial resistance.You will also be introduced to the anatomical structures and bodysystems that enable you to move and be active and what happens to the systems when they experience trauma in order to heal.
