Turing Scheme
The Turing scheme provides funding for students to undertake a study or work placement at partner institutions or organisations across the world.
We apply for Turing funding on behalf of our international year and semester abroad students, and our summer and short-term programme students, every year. Whether we are successful in receiving funding and how much funding we receive is a decision made by the Turing scheme.
It has not yet been confirmed whether Turing funding will be available in 2025-26.
Eligibility
General eligibility criteria for the scheme are:
- All levels of study are eligible- FY, UG, PGT and PGR
- Minimum duration of 28 days (4 weeks) up to a maximum of 365 days (12 months)
- For study mobility, an agreement between the institutions must be in place.
- For work mobility, no agreement is needed but any placements would need to be approved by Keele.
- Activity should ideally contribute towards the programme of study at Keele but for summer programmes this is not necessary.
How is funding calculated?
Students will receive a grant towards living or programme costs. The amount of grant varies depending on the destination country, and duration of time that you are away.
Turing uses a per-day rate, so your grant is calculated on the dates that you are required to be at your host institution. The dates are signed off and confirmed by your host in two different documents that we collect.
Students will receive a slightly higher funding rate per day for destinations with a higher cost of living, or for placements that are 28-56 days long.
Further funding is available for students with disabilities or additional needs to support any adaptations or requirements whilst on your mobility programme.
You can find more information on the Turing website: Overview of the Turing Scheme - GOV.UK
WP Funding
WP (widening participation) students receive a higher cost of living grant. Students who fall into any one of Keele's WP criteria (including mature students, care leavers, household income of below £25k, student carers, students who are estranged) will receive a higher living grant as listed above.
These students will also receive a grant to cover travel costs. This is based on actual costs, so when you have booked travel for your outbound and return journeys, you will need to provide us with copies of your receipts.
WP students are also eligible to claim for the following essential travel costs:
- passports
- visa applications and associated costs e.g. translated documents, police certificates
- vaccines
- travel insurance
- medical certificates
Documentation and process
There will be a number of documents that you need to submit as evidence. If you are successful in receiving Turing funding, you use Careerhub to fill in the necessary forms and submit the required documentation.
