Work placements
In an increasingly competitive job market, employers are seeking to recruit employees who have high-level knowledge, skills and an understanding of the workplace. In between year two and three of your studies, you can spend time gaining practical experience with a physics-focused company or organisation. This will enable you to apply the skills and theories you have learnt to real situations in the industrial workplace. You will also enhance your employability skills in the presentation and communication of data, the writing of reports, and the ability to work independently, and as part of a team. Work experience in your area of interest will not only demonstrate your commitment and passion, but will also enable you to make meaningful connections by networking with experts in the field.
If you don't think you can commit to a full year on placement, our Flexible Work Placement module has built-in flexibility on when and how you complete your placement, enabling you to balance your time in industry around existing demands.
We also offer work placements based in schools and colleges, specifically for students interested in entering the teaching profession.

In between years two and three of your studies you may choose to spend a year or semester studying abroad. Central Science Laboratories
Develop your practical skills in Keele's state-of-the-art Central Science Laboratories
Facilities
Laboratory work is an integral part of our programme that enables you to learn a variety of practical, computational and transferable skills that employers value. Practical teaching will take place in Keele’s state-of-the-art Central Science Laboratories (CSL), as well as existing laboratories in the Lennard Jones Building. You will also have access to our on-campus Observatory, which opens regularly to the public and recently underwent a £250,000 refurbishment. It houses a 24-inch telescope capable of research-quality imaging,
a 6-inch solar telescope and a 12-inch refractor built in 1874. The Observatory is readily accessible to our students, several of whom get actively involved in its operation.

Course Content
Our Foundation Year allows you to develop your critical thinking, academic reading, writing, and communication study skills along with subject-specific knowledge and skills which will be invaluable in your academic studies and beyond. Upon meeting the progression criteria and successfully completing our Foundation Year, you will automatically progress into your Keele undergraduate degree with the confidence that you have the skills, and knowledge needed to successfully complete your course.
This Foundation Year is a two-semester programme which provides a tailored pre-degree programme of study to better prepare you for the BSc (Hons) Physics with Renewable Energy course. For example, the Advancing Physics module introduces a whole new set of mathematical skills, you will begin to look at more complex algebra, introduce calculus into your physics equations and revisit some of the topics covered in foundations and see how you can solve more interesting and advanced problems using these new techniques. You will begin to move beyond Newtonian physics as we start to apply our skills to other areas such as quantum physics and relativity. Course content has been developed in collaboration with degree teaching teams, so that by the time you begin Year 1, you will be ready to excel at your studies, as the majority of our Foundation Year students do.

We also offer a January start for some of our Foundation Year courses. Adopting a blended learning approach, the January start is particularly useful for students wishing to return to education following time out of studying, or who are seeking a flexible approach to their Foundation Year studies. Our January start is available across most of our Science, Humanities, Social Science, Health and Business courses.
Whilst still being a full-time course, our blended delivery model combines live teaching sessions - both online and on-campus - with self-directed study, enabling you to predominantly study at a time that suits your lifestyle. You will benefit from weekly online taught sessions which encourage you to engage with your teachers and peers.
In addition to online study there will be a series of full study days that you will be required to attend throughout each semester. These sessions may include lab-based activities, group work, review of course and assessment materials studied online. They will emphasise opportunities for you to deepen your knowledge and understanding of your chosen route.

The modules that you will take on a January start Foundation Year will be similar to those for the September start, but on a compressed timescale and tailored to a blended learning approach (with the majority of learning taking place online).
