Green Week 2018
Green Week 2018 is themed around 'Tackling Plastic Waste', and many of this year's events aim to engage students and staff with this environmental and social issue.
This year's events and activities include stalls in the Chancellor's building, library and Students' Union promoting sustainability on campus and action you can take to avoid plastics. The week-long schedule of events will be launched by a film screening on Monday 12th March of 'A Plastic Ocean', followed by a Q&A with Keele's own plastics experts Dr Deirdre McKay and Dr Sharon George, who have both featured in The Conversation and in radio and television interviews relating to plastics.
Each of the activities in the Green Week schedule have also been mapped to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, which aims to highlight how engaging with these activities can contribute to achieving particular goals, but also the interconnected nature and impacts of many of the week's events, and the goals themselves.
Throughout the week, we have 2 Keele University Sustainability Research Network Seminars taking place; the first in the Old Library at Keele Hall where Dr Deirdre McKay and PhD student Greenie Mine will discuss a community project linking to plastics, and the second welcoming Professor Johan Frishammer to speak about circular economies. A 'Play with Plastic' session will take place with a visiting artist, where you can contribute to building a coral reef from plastic, whilst the Campus Green Team will be offering students volunteering opportunities within the campus.
We're also challenging staff and students to take the #PlasticFreeKeele challenge and pledge to reduce single-use plastic consumption during Green Week, and hopefully beyond. Add your pledge on our Do.Nation campaign page and share your pledge using the #PlasticFreeKeele hashtag.
