Whilst the UK has achieved substantial reductions in carbon emissions in various sectors of our economy, transportation has proven stubbornly resistant to change such that it now represents the largest single source of terrestrial emissions. A "modal shift" to electric vehicles is now seen as the best approach and is central to government policy with a ban on the sale of internal combustion engine vehicles having been bought forward to 2030. This talk will explore the potential environmental benefits associated with electric vehicles and the ongoing and future challenges whilst attempting to bust some common myths along the way. It'll also cover the realities of EV ownership for anyone considering the change themselves.

Bio

Richard Waller is a Senior Lecturer in Physical Geography in the School of Geography, Geology and the Environment and an enthusiastic member of the Institute of Sustainable Futures. His research to date has focused on glacial environments, Arctic permafrost and the impacts of climate change but is increasingly focusing on "e mobility" and the provision of charging infrastructure having made the transition to an EV himself in December 2018.
