Professor Mark Ormerod became Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost of Keele University in 2015.

He was previously Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research and Enterprise) and Head of the Schools of Physical and Geographical Sciences, and Chemistry and Physics.

He was appointed to a lectureship in chemistry at Keele in 1992, and in 1997 was awarded a prestigious EPSRC Advanced Research Fellowship and promoted to Professor of Clean Technology and Inorganic Materials Chemistry in recognition of his research achievements.  He graduated in natural sciences from Cambridge University and undertook his PhD in surface chemistry there, before being awarded the Cambridge University Oppenheimer Fellowship.

Professor Ormerod has an international profile for his leadership, advocacy and communication of low carbon and environmental sustainability issues, including serving on numerous national bodies.  His original research interests centred on more environmentally friendly, greener chemical processes, sustainable materials chemistry and clean technologies, publishing over 150 extensively cited papers.  His interests extend to interdisciplinary research in sustainable energy, reducing energy use and factors affecting pro-environmental behaviour in individuals and communities.

Professor Ormerod has a strong commitment over many years to the local region and to widening access to and participation in higher education.  He plays a key role in Keele’s increasingly strong engagement with its partner Colleges, including the new Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire Institute of Technology.
