Biography

Nick studied medicine at Newcastle University, graduating in 2010. He completed his foundation training on the North West Thames scheme in London, during which time he became interested in how research and service evaluation could improve clinical practice. Nick moved to Sydney, Australia and worked in critical care for two years. Deciding he wanted to pursue a research career, Nick moved back to the UK to take up a position as a NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow alongside general practice training in Oxford. He successfully completed training in August 2018 and works as a locum GP in Oxford.

Nick’s research has focused predominantly on heart failure and atrial fibrillation. He completed a MSc in Evidence-Based Health Care, including a systematic review of survival rates in chronic heart failure. He has also been involved in setting up a randomised controlled trial of atrial fibrillation screening and a James Lind Alliance Priority Setting Partnership for advanced heart failure. In 2018, Nick was awarded the Wellcome Trust Primary Care Doctoral Fellowship to undertake a review of interventions that help reduce stroke rates in people with both heart failure and atrial fibrillation.

Nick is also interested in teaching and completed a Masters in Clinical Education at Newcastle University in 2009. He has held college tutoring positions whist in Oxford and is an Oxford University Medical Education Fellow and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
