Researchers studying the secrets of the Universe secure combined £1.5m in funding
Researchers from Keele University studying the secrets of the Universe have secured almost £1.5m combined for three new studies.
The academics from Keele’s Astrophysics Research Centre have secured the funding from UK Research and Innovation’s Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) for three new studies, which will be carried out over the next three years.
The researchers will be studying issues including nuclear astrophysics, the structure and ages of stars, and the formation of star clusters, including:
- A study led by Professor Raphael Hirschi using 3D simulations to learn more about the structure of massive stars
- Research led by Dr John Taylor determining the ages of exoplanet-hosting stars observed by the European Space Agency’s upcoming PLATO mission
- A study led by Dr Nick Wright which aims to understand how and when star clusters form
Professor Hirschi is also co-investigator on another study which has been funded by the STFC, led by Armagh Observatory and Planetarium in collaboration with the University of York.
Dr Nick Wright, Research Director for Astrophysics at Keele University, said: “This funding will allow us to address fundamental questions related to the formation and evolution of stars, clusters and planetary systems.”
