Keele researchers to play key role in Green Football Weekend
A team of multi-disciplinary researchers and students from Keele University are set to play a key role in Green Football Weekend - a nationwide campaign which encourages fans, clubs and leagues to act on climate change.
Taking place over the weekend of February 2-5, the world's largest climate-football campaign will highlight and raise awareness of climate change, and show the small ways clubs and fans can make changes which add up to make a big difference.
Researchers from the University will be outside six stadiums over the weekend, including matches involving Stoke City, Everton and Manchester United, where they will interview supporters about Green Football Weekend, climate change and sustainability in football. The team will then analyse the data collected, with their findings used in the official report on the campaign that will help shape future initiatives.
Keele University is sector-leading in sustainability and environmental education, making it the ideal partner for the event, which is driven by Sky Sports, TNT Sports and The Football Supporters' Association.
Dr Matthew Hutchinson, lecturer in Sport Business Management, and co-lead on the research said: "Green Football Weekend is all about fan action, so getting out to stadiums this weekend to understand the perception of football fans on climate change and environmental sustainability is critical. Keele is renowned for its sector leading work in sustainability, and we're excited to be involved in this nationwide campaign."
Dr Sara Vestergren, lecturer in Psychology, said: "The football community is an amazing and socially powerful community. We want to understand more about how fans see the relationship between environmental sustainability and the football community."
