Posted on 28 February 2017

Keele is celebrating International Women’s Day with a series of talks from inspiring women who have all excelled in their field.

The talks will reflect the steps which the University has taken to increase gender equality in the workplace and, in particular, through the Athena SWAN award scheme which recognises advancement of gender equality.

What does a physicist look like?
On Thursday, March 2nd, Jenni Dyer, Head of Diversity at the Institute of Physics, will be discussing the institute’s diversity programme in a public lecture entitled "What does a physicist look like and does it matter?"

The talk will draw from the IoP’s recent publication about the diversity of the physics community and their work to reduce the stereotypes and unconscious biases about physics and physicists, including improving the number of girls taking A-level physics
The event, in conjunction with Keele’s School of Chemical and Physical Sciences and sponsored by West Midlands Branch of the Institute of Physics, will be held in the University’s Lennard Jones building from 7.30pm, with refreshments available in the foyer from 6.30pm.

Psychological issues in cervical cancer prevention
On International Women’s Day, Wednesday, March 8th, Keele’s School of Psychology is hosting a talk by Dr Laura Marlow, from 12pm-1pm at the Dorothy Hodgkins building, room 0.51.

Dr Marlow, from University College London, is a research associate working on projects that aim to use behavioural science to increase participation in cervical cancer prevention programmes. She will discuss an overview of cervical cancer prevention strategies in the UK and psychological issues surrounding this.

A Long Way from Bankside Crescent
Dr Catherine Raines, the UK Government’s Director-General for International Trade and Investment, will share her experiences in the industry, at a guest lecture held on Thursday, March 9th. Dr Raines is the most senior woman in Dr Liam Fox’s Department for International Trade and in 2016 was listed by the Sunday Times as one of the UK’s Top 500 Most Influential People.

Her talk, A Long Way from Bankside Crescent, organised by Keele’s School of Pharmacy and the Institute of Liberal Arts and Sciences, will be held at Keele Hall from 5.30pm.

On International Women’s Day the University is also hosting Keele Women Staff Network Lunch at Keele Hall, 1pm-2pm.
