What are the economic motives and behaviours of everyone from individuals and households through to international organisations and governments? How will you as an economist deliver better economic outcomes for all market participants? Our Economics MA has been curated to provide you with an advanced skillset in key areas of applied economics to facilitate your development as a successful economist who can contend with the economic challenges we face in an ever-changing world.
Our focused structure will give you the space to master the monetary rationale of economic interactions so you can become confident in applied economic theory and applied research skills, with a clear policy focus. We’ve embedded employability into the programme with opportunities to engage with local employers through our consultancy and placement projects and develop relationships with professional bodies such as the Government Economic Service via guest lectures and research projects.
You will graduate as an extremely employable economist with analytical skills which are highly sought after by government departments and the private sector. You will develop expertise in areas including advanced cost benefit analysis, the design of policy briefings, The Green Book, monetisation of non-marketed goods and the calculation of carbon footprints. Plus, these skills are enhanced through the programme's optional and dissertation modules which are designed to deliver high quality employability skills.

Research led teaching informs our innovative programme which is designed to fulfil your academic needs and support your future employability. You will start by exploring economics for investment analysis and business to enhance your understanding of the key aspects of microeconomics and macroeconomics. There is a focus on developments in the aggregate economy, examining how markets work and assessing government and central bank policy effectiveness with regards to promoting sustainable economic growth, maintaining monetary and financial stability and promoting the adoption of new technologies/AI in production processes. The fundamentals of long-term economic growth, living standards and trade and globalisation are also covered to improve your expertise.
Established and contemporary microeconomic and macroeconomic theory is studied through a blend of analytics and intuitive reasoning with a strong emphasis on policy application. Microeconomics concentrates on decision making by individuals and firms and the role of information and regulation. Macroeconomics considers the role of of key institutions such as governments and central banks, technological innovation and automation/AI, monetary economics, supply-side economics and adjustment to international shocks.
How will you scope out a research problem and design an appropriate approach for a solution? How do you conduct research? You will develop essential research techniques on this programme so you can confidently undertake either your dissertation, company project or work-based placement opportunity.
How can economic tools be used to address the most pressing environmental, climate and sustainability challenges of our time? Learn to apply economic approaches and tools, grounded on sound theory and concepts. You will use factual and empirical evidence, to solve real world problems through case studies related to themes such as environmental pollution, food and ecosystem services, recycling, energy production and consumption or reduction of carbon footprints.
Public sector economics and policy is examined in-depth to develop a comprehensive understanding of the key concepts and established theory in this context. Again, our approach is both analytical and intuitive with a specific attention focusing on policy and real-world applications. We focus on taxation, analyse government expenditure in areas such as defence and education, and assess policy tools such as cost benefit analysis and the mechanisms of social choice. You’ll evaluate current debates around the quality of goods and services provided by the private and public sector so you can really get to the heart of these issues.
A range of optional modules provides the chance to align your studies with specific areas of economics or business. Options include gaining an insight into modern banking, elevating your understanding of consumer behaviour, exploring business from an international perspective and gaining an introduction to international economic law.
You could also choose to enhance your creativity and personal development by learning established creativity techniques, explore the current digital revolution and the way it is changing financial services, examine how the financial sector is moving to a more sustainable future, or analyse current and future challenges faced by global business.
Other choices include evaluating contemporary debates and research in the world of strategic human resource management and looking at how strategy and information management can successfully be achieved through harnessing data, information and knowledge. You will also have the choice of undertaking an economics dissertation, consultancy project or a work placement.
